The Smile of Spring, 2024

This year our annual Port Moody event “The Smile of Spring” will be dedicated to George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”, one of the most important and influential works of the 20th century. Yarilo pianists Jane Hayes and Anna Levy will be joined by guests jazz musicians Kristian Alexandrov and Shanon Gaye to offer a new look at this piece. Come and enjoy the unique experience of a musical collage composed of the most popular pieces and songs of George Gershwin!

In two parts, we will present classical and jazz compositions. In part one, we will feature classical music choices by Jocelyn Morlock, Witold Lutoslawski, and a work by Bulgarian composer Bentzion Eliezer which has been strongly influenced by Rhapsody in Blue, combining jazz and Bulgarian folk tunes in a popular medley. In part two, we transition to jazz and present Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue—Re-envisioned.

We express our special thanks to Manuel Bernachek of Showcase Pianos for bringing to this event two of the world’s best grand pianos! Without his help this concert would not be possible.

We also would like to express our gratitude to the Pleasantside Community Association for supporting these concerts over the past several years.

Date and Time:  Saturday, April 27th at 2:00 p.m.
Location:  Old Orchard Hall (646 Bentley Rd, Port Moody)

In Partnership with HomeRoutes, SchmidtHaus presents Burnstick.

For over a decade, Burnstick, the award-winning husband and wife duo of Francophone-Métis singer-songwriter Nadia and Plains-Cree guitarist Jason, have been crafting songs that push the boundaries of traditional folk. The duo's signature sound is driven by Jason's masterful playing of 100-year-old Weissenborn lap slide guitars that magically resonate with Nadia's vocals. Together, that chemistry is palpable on stage during their performances. Their 2019 JUNO-nominated debut album, Kîyânaw (Cree: Us) album, featuring thunderous singles like "Pay No Mind" and the Canadian Folk Music Award-winning "Some Kind of Hell," brought Burnstick's ability to blend traditional and modern influences to the national stage. With this album, Burnstick encourages the reclamation of each other's respective cultures while choosing to be stronger, together. Beyond their successful album, the duo's talent for composing has led them to collaborate on numerous award-winning film and television projects.
